Late Patrick Swayze’s Wife Of 34 Years Struggles With The Grief Of His Death Even 11 Years After Losing Him To Cancer

Lisa Niemi told Swayze that she loves him before he dozed off to eternal sleep.

It is heartbreaking to move on from the person you have loved for the largest part of your life. After spending decades together, their demise disturbs your heart and leaves you in deep despair. Patrick Swayze's wife, Lisa Niemi is going through such a phase after he passed away in 2009 due to pancreatic cancer. Though it has been 11 years, Lisa still holds on to the pain of losing him. She also admitted that she feels his presence around her every single day.

"When you lose someone, you never stop loving them and I feel like I have a different relationship with him now," said Lisa, according to Entertainment Tonight. She added, "It's just, he's not physically present, you know what I mean?"

After his diagnosis, Swayze fought cancer for 22 months. Despite the fact that pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates, he was determined to make it through. And though he was in a lot of pain, the actor had said that his illness made him realize how amazing his life really was. “I began thinking to myself, I’ve had more lifetimes than any 10 people put together, and it’s been an amazing ride," he wrote. "So this is okay," said the actor, according to his memoir The Time of My Life, according to Reuters.

After his death, Niemi opened up about the cancer battle. "You spend every day fighting for that person's life. I know that he spent every day fighting for his own... He survived 22 months, which was miraculous with the diagnosis that he received," she said.

In her memoir Worth Fighting For, Lisa recalled the heartbreaking final moments of Swayze. She stated, "My last words to Patrick? ‘I love you,’ and he responded with 'I love you.'" She further continued, "I cherished our time alone, holding his hand, listening to music, sleeping with my arm around him, my head on his shoulder, wordlessly," according to the Daily Mail.

Lisa added, "In the quiet of Monday morning, September 14, I looked at his face and listened to the tiny sips of air he was taking. There was something delicate, childlike about it. I knew it was time."

According to People, Lisa texted Swayze's number a year after his death while boarding a flight. "I just put what I always did: 'I love you.' And then I cried for a little bit to myself. It [the text message] didn't come back. So either somewhere out there received it, or someone's going, 'Somebody loves me!' And you know what? I figured it was a win-win situation," she said.

Lisa met Swayze when they were just teenagers. "The first time Buddy and I danced together was at a school exhibition. We walked out on stage... I looked in his eyes, it was like everything came alive," said Lisa, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Their love blossomed and the couple tied the knot in 1975. The couple kept their vows to be with each other forever, even if the forever for them was only 34 years. Having spent years with the love of her life, Lisa found it extremely difficult to cope with the loss. However, the memories they made together is helping her face one day at a time.
