In 1971, Phil was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets after his junior year at the University of California Berkeley in the supplemental "hardship draft.”   That was the first year the NBA allowed underclassmen to enter the draft.  In December 1972, he became one of the youngest players to score 50 points in a game going for 53 points against the Portland Trailblazers.  That was an NBA high for points in a game that season.

During the summer, Phil is co-director of the Chenier-DuPree basketball camp in Columbia Md.  He and Dave DuPree, a longtime sports writer with USA today, established the camp in 1988.  Get more info on the camp at

He’s a proud lover of old R & B music as well as Smooth Jazz.  Phil says, “The old R & B songs take me back to those high school and college days vividly and quickly!” 

Phil has been a long time member of the Greater Washington community, dating back to the early 80's, working for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington.  He has made numerous appearances at youth agencies, schools and other community based organizations.
